Siesta Beach, located on the Siesta Key barrier island in Florida, has been ranked the country’s top beach in a yearly survey by Florida International University professor Steven Leatherman, also know as Dr. Beach. The Sarasota gem is known for its emerald water and brilliant white sand.

Leatherman stated “The sand is like sugar … You have to bring sunglasses because it’s so bright.  It’s super soft, super fine. They claim to have the finest, whitest sand in the world and I can’t argue with that.”

The beach is also known for its calm waters and cleanliness.

Shallow water depth, near the shore, combined with year round lifeguard protection makes Siesta Beach one of the nation’s safest beaches.

Leatherman ranks beaches on 50 criteria, including water quality, the look and feel of the sand, crowds and facilities. A top score is 250. Siesta Beach received a score in the 230’s.  After a beach receives the top ranking on Leatherman’s list, it’s no longer considered for future rankings. A #1 ranking usually provides a 15 to 20 percent increase in visitors to the winner of the survey.

Unlike other beaches, which are made from mostly coral, Siesta Beach’s sand is nearly pure quartz. It’s estimated Siesta Beach’s sand is millions of years old. The sand initiated in the Appalachians and then carried by the rivers and deposited on the shores of Siesta Key.

Siesta Beach amenities include:

  • Picnic tables
  • Tennis courts
  • Rest rooms
  • Volleyball courts
  • Soccer field
  • 20 station fitness trail
  • Playground equipment
