Just 2 hours from Washington D.C. and 4 hours from New York City, a 30-mile long stretch of beautiful white sand beaches beckons sun-loving vacationers to Delaware’s Atlantic coast. The most accessible beach vacation destination for people who live in the Mid-Atlantic region, Delaware Shores is just as beautiful but less crowded than better-known Virginia Beach which is a full day’s drive away from New York City, Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia. Close enough for a quick weekend getaway, a Delaware Shores vacation is a much-anticipated annual event for many East Coast families.

The string of charming beach towns that dot the coast of Delaware and its barrier islands from Cape Henlopen State Park south to Fenwick Island on the Maryland border are collectively known as Delaware Shores. Easily accessible from U.S. 113, the friendly town of Bethany Beach is a particular favorite with Delaware Shores vacationers. Budget-friendly Bethany Beach offers vacationing families plenty of free and affordable fun beginning, naturally, with the beach. Lapped by the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Bethany Beach’s wide white-sand beach tops the list as one of the mid-Atlantic’s most beautiful beaches. Scenic views and incredible sunsets make a Bethany Beach vacation a memorable event.

Even the most dedicated beach baby needs an occasional break from the sun and sand. Bethany Beach vacationers will find plenty of free and affordably-priced activities off the beach:

  • Learn about local plants and animals at the Bethany Beach Nature Center. Explore 26 acres of forested uplands, freshwater wetlands and tidal wetlands. Tails are open dawn to dusk and children’s programs are offered on Saturdays.
  • Spend a rainy day at the South Coastal Library which has a great children’s area.
  • Take a stroll along the Boardwalk.
  • Enjoy an open-air performance at the bandstand.
  • Fly a kite on the beach.

Delaware Shores can only be described as a complete package. This seven-mile stretch of sandy, Atlantic Ocean beaches consists of several quaint towns and islands, each one offering something for everyone, and all are close enough to the others to make for several vacation stops in one.

We are especially excited to add Delaware Shores to our extensive line-up of iTrip vacation destinations. Our full list of Delaware Shores’ vacation rentals will be available soon, but we know that you can’t wait to start planning your Delaware Shores vacation, so here is a quick overview of all of the dazzling Delaware Shores locations:

Bethany Beach- the most intriguing Delaware Shores’ resort town

    Bethany Beach DE Totem Pole

Bethany Beach is perhaps the most intriguing beach resort town along the seven-mile stretch of sandy, Atlantic Ocean beaches, where it lies guarded by its famous totem pole, in the southwestern corner of Delaware, along with South Bethany and Fenwick Island. The bay side of the beach makes for the perfect spot to sail, swim, fish, surf, boogey board, ski, and boat. Night time brings a frenzy of diverse activities all can enjoy- shopping, fine dining, playing basketball and volleyball on the beach, brushing up on your video game skills in a slew of arcades, or taking a leisurely walk on the 1/2 mile long boardwalk- these are just a few of the things you can enjoy on Bethany Beach.

Dewey Beach – a hot spot for weekend nights

dewey beach deLying just south of Rehoboth, and straddling both sides of Route 1, with the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and Rehoboth Beach to the west, Dewey Beach’s ocean waters are ripe for swimming, surf fishing, skim boarding, and a ton of other water related sports and activities. A spate of restaurants and night clubs constellate the highway and bay, making Dewey Beach a hot spot for weekend nights.

    Fenwick Island – activities abound

Close in proximity to Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island lies on the Delaware-Maryland state line on the south end of Delaware. It is the southernmost of all the quite beach resorts. Intersecting routes 1 and 54, Fenwick Island offers the most desirable array of both bay and ocean watersports; its uncrowded beaches are the luring point for families. Aside from Fenwick Island’s quaint, beautiful beaches, its most popular attraction is the Fenwick Island Lighthouse. Who doesn’t love lighthouses’ right? They’re so mysteriously engaging.

Lewes - a town with plenty of history

A town with plenty of history, Lewes, Delaware is “the first town in the first state.” Settled by the Dutch in 1631, Lewes “offers a wealth of historic, nautical, and recreational activities that reflect on its location at the intersection of the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean”, according to one Lewes website. And, like all of the other Atlantic Ocean beach resort towns, there is no shortage of watersports. Cape Henlopen State Park, just outside of Lewes, is home to several beaches, nature trails, bird sanctuaries, and the Seaside Nature Center. For those of you who enjoy state jumping on your vacation, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry is a spectacular way to cross the bay from Lewes to New Jersey. If you enjoy historical landmarks, Lewes is the place to be.

Milford – a perfect blend of nature and location

Milford, Delaware is all about location-mostly. Centrally located in southern Delaware, Milford is about 18 miles south of Dover, the state capital, 20 miles north of Rehoboth Beach, and 52 miles from Wilmington, the largest city of the state. With two dual highways, U.S. Route 113 and State Route 1, Milford provides easy access for the numerous tourists who frequent the finest beaches around the Atlantic Ocean. But, Milford’s “crown jewel” is the Mispillion River Walk, a greenway built to preserve the waterfront. Milford’s other attraction is The Abbott’s Mill Nature Center, a place where families can have fun while learning at the same time.

Milton - a unique and historic resort town

Known as Delaware’s “Smallest Wonder,” Milton, Delaware is indeed a unique and historic resort town. This little Victorian shipbuilding town makes you feel as if you’ve stepped into a time machine. Who hasn’t wondered what it would be like to go backwards in time and re-visit the 18th and early 19th centuries? And, the best part is that Milton is just a few minutes away from two of the other beautiful Delaware Shores resort towns; Lewes and Rehoboth Beach.

All of the activities you will find in Bethany Beach, you can also find in Rehoboth Beach, including the inordinate amount of water sports, and strolling on a mile long boardwalk. Off the beach, Rehoboth offers a variety of bandstand concerts, a convention center convenient for mixing business with pleasure, shops of all kinds, amusement parks, plenty of dining options, and an exciting nightlife. Rehoboth Beach also plays hosts to a plethora of festivals throughout the year.
